How to pick the right shape rug for your space

Runners, Rounds or Area Rugs... we believe rugs should be just as functional as they are beautiful. Not only does a well-placed rug help define living zones but it anchors furniture, ties a room’s décor together and also softens hard surfaces to reduce noise levels and add warmth.  Airloom has a wide range of standard sized rugs, as well as custom-sizes so you can make sure that the rug choose has the ideal proportions for your space.

Runners

Different rooms and spaces in a house have different levels of foot traffic. Rugs in transition spaces, such as hallways and passageways should be more hardwearing, which is why we often recommend our Robust Range or Inside Out runners as they are water-resistant and easy to clean. These areas often require the thinner width proportions of a runner, along with kitchens and bathrooms, where water-resistant rugs are equally important. Again, if you have a long passageway, and can't seem to find the correct length rug, they can be custom-made to fit your space, no compromise on sizing!

The Robust Range and Inside Out range also flatwoven which gives them the sturdiness to withstand high-traffic areas. What's more, with a very low profile, the flatwoven rugs are easier to clean, which makes them a better choice for people with dust allergies, as fewer allergens get stuck in the fibres.

Area Rugs

A rug can be used to define and anchor a space within an open plan area, suggesting a subtle separation between your living and dining areas in one large space. And while rugs have the power to separate, they also have the power to unite furniture that might otherwise feel disconnected in a living area.

In a dining area, rugs are useful for softening the hard ‘leggy’ look of dining chairs around a table. On the subject of dining room rugs, it's wise to consider choosing an easy-cleaning, water-resistant rug like a design from our Robust Collection or an Inside Out rug

It's a personal preference, but many people feel that they need a soft, plush rug for living areas and bedrooms. But this entirely depends on whether you have children and pets, and whether practicality is very high on your list of priorities.

Round rugs

In our homes, you'll usually find lots of straight lines and square shapes, which is one of the reasons we love round rugs, as they present a counterpoint to all the straight lines, allowing you to be a bit playful with your space. They easily fit in odd shaped, curved or tight spaces and can actually help to make small spaces appear large and more open. Any of our customisable rugs can be made into the right size circle for your space - take a moment to create your own.

A round rug is designed to be more of a focal point than just a floor covering. When compared with a basic rectangle rug, you will notice that a round rug really stands out, especially when it features a statement pattern or colour- have a look at the round designs in our Printed Collection where we go wild with a wide range of fun accent colours and patterns... the easiest way to add a sense of playfulness to any space.

Outside Rugs

With South Africa's great climate, our living areas often tend to spill outside onto patios, decks and stoeps. So we believe these outdoor areas deserve just as much thought as your indoor ones. Outdoor rugs provide comfort and style in outside living areas and can be used to visually connect the interior and exterior of your home. Airloom's wide selection of Indoor/Outdoor rugs are crafted to withstand the elements but also feel comfortable underfoot- not plasticy! Made from polypropylene, the rugs are durable and easy to clean with a quick hose down. They are also naturally resistant to fading, stains and mould.
