FOOTPRINTS MONO | ZIMEMA CTCA (PRINTED RUG)
Cape Town Creative Academy student, Zimema Mvula, gives some insight into her 'Disappearing Footprints' Collection of rugs. "Focusing on endangered African animals (black rhino, cheetah, penguin, bat-eared fox, african hare and blue duiker), these rugs encourage creative play. I imagine children playing games, tracing animal footprints on the rug, whether they are pretending to be a penguin and waddling around the carpets or guiding a toy along the paw prints on a journey. The black and white rugs are also great for babies' tummy time, as infants are naturally drawn to high contrast patterns and shapes." Printed on an ultra-fine soft polyester, Airloom's Printed Collection rugs add a splash of colour and fun design to any space. It also has a built-in non-slip backing.

This rug is part of the Airloom X CTCA EDIT Collaboration

Airloom engaged with Cape Town Creative Academy (CTCA) third-year students in the form of a competition during the course of the 2023 second term, with the goal of Bringing the ideas of young local creatives to life through a range of South African kids' printed rugs. The focus was on imaginative play and authentic storytelling.

Zimema tells us about the inspiration behind her 'Disappearing Footprints' Collection: "I got my design ideas from animals and their unique footprints. I have always been fascinated with animal footprints and learning about their different stories. When I was young, I used to have a set of cards and I would match the animals with their footprints, it was so fun and engaging to do as a child. This design is quite unique as it focuses on different endangered African animals (black rhino, cheetah, penguin, bat-eared fox, african hare and blue duiker). I imagine children playing games, tracing animal footprints on the rug, whether they are pretending to be a penguin and waddling around the carpets or guiding a toy along the prints on a journey or even playing hopscotch, the design encourages creative play.

I picture parents sitting on the rug with their children, sharing knowledge about the different animals' footprints, expanding their minds and understanding and even playing games with their children. This could be great for new parents too, as babies could have tummy time on the black and white rugs, as they are naturally drawn to high contrast patterns and shapes... it helps stimulate and capture their attention."
